15 days & 3lbs Up!
Isn’t it hard, you workout 50 weeks out of the year for that blessed 2 week holiday in the sun!
3 weeks ago I left a cold UK and headed out to the land of dreams i.e. USA for you and me, for what could be considered an awesome ‘vaycay’ (I love using that word!) … It started off with my cousins wedding in Tennessee, 5 days of fun, frolics, food and fizz… Imagine Indian food and parties pretty much everyday! Followed by San Fran, Napa Valley and finished off in Vegas. It really was an incredible trip… But part of me was worried I’d fall off the wagon and go hard on the food and return an elephant… And by elephant I mean having put on a 10lb food baby and additional fat!
I’d taken a gym kit with me, so should I get the opportunity to workout then I’d have no excuse. But anyone who’s been on vaycay would know, however good your intentions are that the big fat Cheesecake Factory Reese Peanutbutter Cheesecake will get you in the end, and if it’s not that then the booze isn’t too far behind.
I’ll be honest, I’m happy at how far I’ve come in my journey (23lbs and 7% body fat down) and truthfully I love the compliments I get from family and friends … I mean who doesn’t like an ego boost now and then? Especially when it’s regarding something you’ve been working your butt off for… And I think that kept me somewhat on track.
Honestly though I did eat, I ate well in fact (a sushi scoffing, in-n-out burger munching, American pancakes and bacon, Hardrock Cafe and Cheesecake Factory kind of well!), I drank enough to be a little merry a couple of times but not enough for a hangover… Sure enough I let go and enjoyed myself, but I realised that with a little concious eating and drinking you can have an awesome holiday without going completely overboard.
I actually did manage to workout a couple of times, once before the wedding and once at 24 Hour Fitness (a huge warehouse of a gym) in San Fran… But I think what kept the weight from piling on was in fact the fun outdoor activities like biking the GG Bridge and walking up and down Lombard Street and obviously walking a helluva lot around Las Vegas, the huge hotels and malls!
I’ve come back 3lbs heavier and honestly I think that’s the biggest accomplishment of the whole trip… I’m happy with that. I know most would freak out about a gain, but you have to remember I let my hair down, I wasn’t training 5 times a week, I was eating whatever I wanted in moderation and I was happy. At the end of the day I looked good, I felt good and I had a great trip.
Being back home has been tough, apart from missing the sunshine and heat, getting back into routine has been a nightmare and I won’t lie, the 12 hour journey has ruined me, I’m on day 6 of my return and even though I’ve worked out 4 times since I just don’t feel I have my mojo back (although that could just be the holiday blues)! So what am I going to do about it you ask?
What I’m NOT going to do is give up… Instead I’ve set myself a new goal and a new timeline …9 weeks to lose 10lbs (+ the 3 I put on)… Pre my next trip to NYC for my friends wedding… After that who knows… at least I’m looking forward and not worrying about the 3lbs gain!
Here’s my advice for you: when on holiday relax, indulge a bit and enjoy your food and drink … But if you do come back a few lbs heavier don’t hate yourself, don’t punish yourself and don’t give up, instead get back on the wagon and keep going until you feel your mojo return!
Be happy and enjoy your summer to its fullest.
