Cardio, HiiT, LISS, Power Lifting, Boxing … my head hurts
You can’t flick through facebook or instagram or even main stream news these days without seeing another article or fitness professional telling you about a new fat blaster or workout that’s going to make you bikini ready or give you a butt lift!
It’s a bloody mind-field and if you’re anything like me , you’ll literally read it all and have a headache!
Sometimes it feels like you’ve gotta plough through and figure it out for yourself, and when you’re not a “fitness fanatic” and you’re doing it to make yourself look and feel good… you just want to be given a little more direction!
So by now you know I enjoy a bit of lifting… (Tom would say otherwise as all he sees is me swear at him whenever something heavy comes my way!) but actually i do enjoy it and I think the screaming or swearing part is reason to my enjoyment.
But… But, then I read something about HiiT (High Intensity Interval Training) and think “am I doing the wrong thing?” because I’m not burning the fat off first, but instead I’m trying to build muscle and trying to burn the fat at the same time whilst keeping my awesome lifestyle (of seeing friends and socializing therefore heading out and about to restaurants and the like)! So should I change my lifting and do more HiiT? Then there’s LISS training (Low Intensity Steady State), so this puts you into a fat burning zone, you have to train for a logn time, but come on it’s pretty damn boring!
What about Kettlebells you say – well I used to love KB training and then just stopped, and stopping made me hate them… they’re just too heavy!
Or what about giving up on weight lifting and doing body weight training only like MetaFit, ahhhh screw that lets do Calisthenics – tbh I don’t even know what this is… I had to “Google” how to spell it… so I think I should keep away!
Ok how about a run – urm no thank you!
Crossfit – well that’s a cross between HiiT and Strength (I think) – but it’s a crazy old cult and my life doesn’t call for being part of a fitness cult!
What about SAS style Military Training with a crazy army guy – yup I’ve done that too.
Pilates, Hot Yoga, Flow Yoga, Ashtanga, Bikram etc… – ok so when it comes to Yoga which form/style do you want to practice?
Do you see what I mean?
How do you decide what works for you?!
How do you figure out what will give yo the best results?! How do you know what you will enjoy?!
Well I say, instead of reading about it why not get up and give it a go!? Because if you don’t try it, you’ll never know if you like it! (however don’t get me wrong – I won’t do Crossfit as I think I’ll die!)
Find something local to you, (so it’s not a mission to get to) book yourself in (so you can’t cancel) and just show up… that’s the first thing to do. Try 10 or 20 different classes before you decide whats right for you… and give them all a fighting chance. You might end up like me where you really get to a stage where you want to spin, lift, box, HiiT, circuit train, swim and there isn’t enough days in the week or hours in the day to do all of the things you like!
If that happens – double your sessions up (if you can!) or do like me and sign up to do your Level 3 PT Diploma in hopes that one day you’ll have the figure of your dreams and won’t have to wait until the end of the day to get your work out in, as you’ll be living in workout clothes and in the gym!
